1 in 700 Australians have Lupus

President's Piece, 01/07/2009

It's amazing how many medical conditions there are.You hear about people suffering from Cancer, heart attacks, diabetes which of course are serious. At Tuesday Mornings Breakfast meeting this week, we had the pleasure of having Ben Jackson from the lupus NSW give us a talk on this life threatening disorder. It was astounding to hear that 1 out of 700 people suffer from this disorder, which prevents the sufferer from doing any activities, or hold a job, because of the crippling pain & other detrimental complications from the disease. The condition, basically has the sufferer unable to leave the house and requires a very supportive group of good family & friends to help these sufferers. At this  stage there is no cure for this autoimmune disease, but trials of certain drugs.

Unfortunately it takes years for those to be diagnosed with this disease and some Doctors have diagnosed these patients with hypochondria than Lupus! This will be discussed at our Board Meeting to see what we can do to help. Ben Jackson is pictured below discussing this condition to our Club members.

At our meeting this week, we were also priviledged to have our AG for 2009/10 Vic Deeble, who loved the experience at our new breakfast Club now being held on a tuesday morning. He spoke to us about the GSE team committee that is currently seeking applicants for next years outbound to France.

Our Club has also been asked by Macquarie Uni to hold a BBQ on Saturday 12th september, for the Uni's open day. We will certainly put our hands up for this as it does raise good money for our Projects. Our Projects Director Leo Driessen will organise a sub committee to get everything ready for this open day.

During our meetings, we do get some great ideas presented from our members, I don't know if it is the caffeine that hits us at this time, or the nourishing hot breakfast provided, but it was  suggested that we have a "Rotary Rant', where all our members get 3 minutes each around the table and tell us about their business or what's happening, I suppose it's a little bit like "show and tell!". Thanks Winston for this idea, I will certainly bring my stop watch, and make sure you can all fit what you're going  to say in 3 minutes!! I know I'll have trouble with this, will you allow me extra time.......

Our Board meeting is set for wednesday evening 15th july 7.30pm at my place. Please make sure you have reports or any suggestions to air at this meeting, I will allow more than 3 minutes each!!!!

Also I would like to thank Greg Jenkins who is giving me some great tips on hosting meetings, as he does alot of mentoring in this area with his work. I will introduce at our meetings a formal part during our informal meeting if that makes sense......  when the reports are presented from each of the services, this will be our formal part and then once all the reports are read, the floor  is open for discussion on any of these topics in an informal discussion manner. Let's try it out, hopefully i wont end up with egg on my face, no pun intended!

I look forward to hearing from Shayne next week, on our membership update, we have a few new ones coming on board. Next meeting I will present our club leadership plan and look forward to getting some great feedback from this.

For any of our readers of this newsletters who are not members, you are most welcome to come to our meetings on Tuesday at the Vogue Cafe Macquarie Centre start at 7.30am finish by 8.30am, we have lots of fun!

see you next tuesday everyone......

cheers President Roseanna signing off
