School holidays, DG's visit and ShelterBox President's Piece, 18/07/2010
What a busy life we lead. School holidays are nearly over. Soon I will have more time to attend to all the other things that keep me occupied. It seems that the only time I can do nothing and not feel guilty is when I'm on holidays. Roll on Summer! Life in Rotary this week has also been busy for me. Last Friday night I attended my first President's meeting with all of the district's presidents. The meeting was run by DG George Papallo, and not surprisingly was in typical Rotary format. Items of interest included an invitation to all Rotarians and friends to hear Tom Henderson, the Founder of ShelterBox, speaking on 31 July at Viking Sports Club, Dundas. ShelterBoxes have been used to provide temporary emergency accomodation for up to 10 people each following a natural disaster. A tent, stove, utensils, blankets and even water purification equipment is packed into each waterproof box which is shipped in immediately following a disaster anywhere in the world. It is a fascinating story. Read more at http://www.shelterboxaustralia.com.au/. Also discussed was next year's District Conference in Canberra. Although it is not until March, we are being urged to book our accomodation at this early stage in order to get the best rooms at the cheapest prices. Trina Mosley is organising our club's bookings. It promises to be a great weekend, culminating in a dinner at the Great Hall in Parliament House. Back to our next meeting. We will be visited by District Governor George Papallo, his wife Cathy and our Assistant Governor Raylene Jarvis. This is the only scheduled visit by the District Governor this year, so come along and meet DG George and his wife and hear more about Rotary and George's plans for the year. See you all Tuesday, Ross |
