The Federal Election, and a Membership Drive

President's Piece, 22/08/2010

What an exciting Federal election result! The opinion polls were proved to be right on target – they predicted a cliffhanger and that’s what we got: a hung parliament with a minority government likely. It will make for some very interesting times ahead, no matter which side of politics is able to form government.

What is completely certain is that there has been a change of representative for the seat of Bennelong, our club’s electorate. Maxine McKew has been replaced by our very own member John Alexander.  Congratulations John for a difficult job well done. Watching TV on Saturday night, John appeared to get more airplay than both Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard. We look forward to seeing him at our meetings whenever he is in Sydney and catching up on what is happening in Canberra.

Our club is in a unique position: we now have members from all three levels of Government: John Alexander, Federal member for Bennelong, Victor Dominello, State member for Ryde, and Vic Tagg, Councillor for Ryde Council. Not bad for a young club!

We are having our first Membership Drive on Tuesday 28th September. Deidre Anderson, our membership director has arranged Louise Savage, Australia’s most successful paralympian to be our guest speaker. It will be held at Macquarie University at our normal meeting time of 7:30am. The idea is to bring along many prospective female members to this meeting where they can hear Louise and also learn about what we do as a Rotary Club. Another Membership Drive, this time for prospective male members, will be held next year.

So pencil in 28th September into your diary and start inviting! For all our Friends of Macquarie Park Rotary Club who receive this bulletin every week, here is an opportunity to come and meet us and listen to an inspiring speaker. Keep watching for more details.

Our meeting on Tuesday will have as guest speaker Lyn Allen from RASAID. Also present will be Jack Mallen-Cooper, the vice president of the soon to be chartered Macquarie University Rotaract Club.

See you then,

Ross
